The Cry of the Heart

The Lord is My Shepherd

This is one of my favorite prayers in the Bible, and although it is read at funerals, it is more about life than about death.  As a matter of fact, how can it be about the dead when it says that God prepares a table for us in the presence of our enemies?  Our enemies are not in heaven.  They are here on this earth.

It is an awesome confession of God's provision in the face of adversity.  It is a confession of victory, where even in the face of our enemies, God prepares a feast for us.  As we walk with Him, in the Glory of His presence, we have no fear of death.  We have peace in the midst of the storms of life, and our "cup runneth over" with all of the goodness of God.  Praise His Holy Name!

The second part of this page is a how you can take this Psalm and turn it into a prayer, and personalize it for your own life.  I like doing that.  It makes things come alive for me, and I hope that you will be blessed by it too.

Psalm 23

The Lord is my Shepherd;
I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
For His Name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the
Valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil:
For Thou art with me;

Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me
In the presence of mine enemies:
Thou anointest mine head with oil;
Mine cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life:
And I will dwell in the
House of the Lord for ever.

Lord, You are My Shepherd;
I shall not want.

You make me to lie down in green pastures.
You lead me beside the still waters.

You restore my soul.
You lead me in the paths of righteousness
For Your Name's sake.

Yes, even though I walk through the
Valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
Because You are with me.

Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
In the presence of mine enemies.
You anoint my head with oil.
My cup runs over.

Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me,
And I shall dwell in the
House of the Lord for ever.
